Turkey fryers are no longer being approved by a nationally recognized testing agency (Under-writers Laboratories) and are discouraged by the National Fire Protection Association due to the danger they currently impose on operators.
The NDW⁄NAS Patuxent River Fire & Emergency Services (N30) reminds all commands, tenants, and activities aboard Patuxent River, Webster Field, and Solomons Recreation Center that turkey fryers are not approved or authorized for use in accordance with NRNDWINST 11320.10E. No permits will be given for the use of turkey fryers.
The use of turkey fryers is discouraged for the following reasons:
It is easy to overfill the cooking pot with oil, allowing oil to spill out of the unit when the turkey is placed into the pot. Oil may hit the burner and possibly cause a fire.
Many times fryers are operated in close proximity to combustible materials such as decks, siding, and structures.
Partially frozen turkeys placed into the fryer can cause a spillover effect. This too, may result in a fire.
With no thermostat controls, turkey fryers have the potential to overheat the oil to the point of combustion.
The sides of the cooking pot, lid and pot handles get dangerously hot, posing a severe burn hazards.
Should anyone have any additional questions, please feel free to contact the Fire Prevention Office.
