Holiday Mailfor Heroes
The American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes, Inc. have joined forces to invite Americans to ‘‘send a touch of home” to United States service members and veterans across the country and abroad. In its third year, the Holiday Mail for Heroes program is an opportunity to share joy and thanks with our service members throughout the holiday season by way of a greeting card.
Cards should be sent to Holiday Mail for Heroes, P.O. Box 5456, Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456. The deadline is Monday, Dec. 7.
Every card received will be screened for hazardous materials by Pitney Bowes and distributed to participating Red Cross chapters nationwide. Once the cards arrive at the Red Cross chapters, they are sorted and reviewed by volunteers who then distribute them to service members, their families and veterans in communities across the country.
Be sure to sign all cards, and entitle all cards ‘‘Dear Service Member, Family or Veteran.” There is a limit of 15 cards per person or 50 for school class or business group, and cards should be bundled in large envelopes. Letters should not be included with these cards nor should personal information such as home or email addresses or inserts of any kind. Glitter should not be used as excessive amounts can aggravate health issues of wounded recipients
For more information, visit the Red Cross Web site at www.redcross.org⁄holidaymail.
Parent Workshop
St. Mary’s County Public Schools uses a variety of psycho-educational tests to uncover the strengths and weaknesses of students who may require special education services to learn and be successful.
On Dec. 2, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Chris Grace, SMCPS school psychologist, will present a workshop for parents about the psycho-educational tests currently used in SMCPS to determine eligibility for special education services.
Grace will explain what the tests measure, what the results mean for a child and how those results help teachers plan instructional strategies. This workshop is free, but registration is required. The workshop takes place in the Board of Education Meeting Room at 21360 Moakley St. in Leonardtown.
