The Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Pentagram runs a weekly section called ‘‘News and Notes” containing short items of interest to the military Family in the National Capital Region.
Information appearing in the ‘‘News and Notes” section of the Pentagram usually tells about an upcoming activity or event such as Army Community Service programs, classes and activities, activities sponsored or held in clubs and private organizations at JBMHH and Rader Health Clinic notifications — a flu shot schedule for example.
In addition, you will see in the ‘‘News and Notes” section U.S. Army Band concert information, Family Team Building classes, info from the USO, Education Center offerings including college terms and testing, ski club, travel info, general information on events at the Pentagon and religious activities sponsored by JBMHH chapels.
The aim of ‘‘News and Notes” is to get clear, concise information to readers before the event, so they can attend the dance, participate in the class or avoid the traffic jam. If you’re not sure your notice could go in ‘‘News and Notes,” give us a call or send us an e-mail.
The best time to submit your notice is two weeks prior (Friday, close of business for the following Friday publication) to the newspaper issue you want the notice to appear in. Example:
‘Okay’ news and notes
The (exciting) event is Saturday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m., at the Officers Club at Fort McNair. Cost is not too many $$$ and includes dinner and dancing. So and so is the speaker. Call You Know Who at (555) 777-@@@@ to make reservations and get more information. Make your reservation by close of business Friday, Dec. 4 or you’ll be too late.
‘Better’ news and notes
Make reservations by Friday, Dec. 4 for the (exciting) event Saturday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m., at the Officers Club at Fort McNair. Cost is not too many $$$ and includes dinner and dancing. So and so is the speaker. Call You Know Who at (555) 777-@@@@ to make reservations and get more information.
On item 2 above, the better news & notes, the Pentagram should get your item Friday, Nov. 20, so that it could run in the paper Friday, Nov. 27 and Friday, Dec. 4. That would give you two runs before folks have to make reservations.
Due to space restrictions, we can’t guarantee any item will run more than two times. We try to include everything we can, even when it arrives after the deadline of Friday, close of business for the following Friday, but the paper simply fills up. As with other submissions to the Pentagram, we reserve the right to edit ‘‘News & Notes” articles for space and content. Please keep in mind the ‘‘who, what, where, when, how and why” of things when you send items, as follows:
What — is the event and how much does it cost?
When — date and time
Where — Building name or number or street address
Who — can attend, or who does the info apply to?
Critical Info — is there a reservation deadline?
POC — full name and phone number for reservations, more info or Web site. Be sure to leave your info for Pentagram staff to get more info.
Please send us information one month at a time, not a full year’s calendar input.
Submissions from private organizations will be considered for publication based on a space available, first-come, first-served basis as follows:
Private organizations registered on base with Family Morale, Welfare and Recreation or those with a direct attachment to official base agencies will be considered first. Unaffiliated non-profit organizations will be considered next.
For profit and commercial organizations will be considered last and used only if the services offered are unique and of significant benefit to the military audience. For advertising, call the Pentagram printer at (301) 670-2543.
Submissions will also be evaluated on the following: meaningfulness and relevance to the community, uniqueness of the information presented and the time constraints of the editorial and publishing cycle. Announcements that have not yet appeared will take priority over announcements that have already run in the paper.
Send submissions for ‘‘News and Notes” via e-mail to pentagram@conus.army.mil, or mail or drop them off to the JBMHH Pentagram, Bldg. 59, Room 116C, Fort Myer, Va. 22211.
