Lexie, a freshman, uses her momentum to send the ball spiraling down too fast for ECS to react.
The Quantico High School Lady Warriors volleyball team overcame shoddy serving to win the first match of theDelaney Athletic Conference championship Monday against Emmanuel Christian School 3-1 at home.

Quantico lost to ECS in early September and came back later in October for the victory. This game was not only thebeginning of the championships, but also a tie breaker between the two rivals.

Quantico helped ECS get ahead by giving them about 20 points with missed and short serves over the course of the four games.

‘‘I think the first game we served 28 percent,” said Head Coach Robert Hume. ‘‘We’re usually 80 percent.”

Aside from the struggle with serves, the Lady Warriors lost several other points for hitting and crossing under the net.

Despite the small battles within themselves, the Warriors volleyed well and were able to keep a strong lead in the first game, taking a 25-23 victory.

Warriors lost the second game 25-20 after allowing small mistakes to take over. They gave away a total of eight service points in that game alone.

‘‘I think we could have done better,” said Lady Warrior Hannah, a ninth grader. ‘‘Other than [serves] we didpretty good.”

ECS began to slack in the third game with seemingly amateur serve returns.

At this point ECS could barely get an arm on the ball losing the game 25-15.

The final game became a constant struggle for possession. The teams remained shoulder to shoulder.

When it came down to the wire with the teams tied 23-23, a short serve by Quantico gave ECS possession and the lead. Quantico was able to side out after ECS’ short serve.

The teams were tied and Quantico was able to pull ahead and claim the victory.

‘‘I am so excited,” said Hannah, cupping her hands over her mouth. ‘‘I think we really deserve it because we work hard. We really wanted it.”

The Lady Warriors ended the season with a loss against Wakefield School Tuesday. They ended with a recordof 12-10.
