MCB Quantico Munitions Response Site Prioritization Protocol

The Department of the Navy (DON), comprised of Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Washington and the Marine Corps Base (MCB) Quantico, in cooperation with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), announce that a public availability session will be held on Nov. 17 at the Wingate By Wyndam Hotel (Aquia Room), 15 Salisbury Drive, Stafford, from 7 - 8 p.m. to discuss the reapplication of the Department of Defense’s MunitionsResponse Site Prioritization Protocol (MRSPP) atMCB Quantico.

MCB Quantico is one of many military installations throughout the United States that is being reviewed under the MRSPP. This protocol is used to assess sites that may have unexploded ordnance, discarded military munitions, or munitions constituents and to assign priorities for any additional investigation or munitions removal that may be required. Evaluation criteria, including types of munitions that may be present, ease of public access to the site and number of people living near the site, are considered under the MRSPP.

Recently, the DON published the 2009 MunitionsResponse Program Management Plan for MCB Quantico, which includes the results from reapplying the MRSPP. Community input is integral to the remedial process and public involvement is encouraged. Thus, the DON is accepting public comments on the plan from Nov. 9 through Dec. 8. At the public availability session, MCB Quantico, DON, EPA, and DEQ representatives will be available to meet with you one-on-one to discuss any questions you may have about the plan or the Munitions Response Program. The public may comment during the public availability session and⁄or may send written comments to the following address. Comments must be postmarked no later than Dec. 8.
