Six Marines from the National Capital Region headed to Barcroft Elementary School Oct. 27 to carve pumpkins with several classes of third-graders. The Marines go to Barcroft every Tuesday during the year to tutor children, but the pumpkin carving is an annual tradition for the third grade.

‘‘It’s a treat for our third-graders, they look forward to it,” said Dora Sue Black, a reading specialist at Barcroft, as well as the coordinator for the Marine Buddy program. ‘‘A lot of fourth-graders ask if they can do it again this year.”

Each student brought a pumpkin to the cafeteria, and the Marines helped them draw a face on it, scoop out the insides and carve the face.

We like to come during the holidays especially, since we get to do some fun activities,” said Marine Pfc. Heather Kennedy. ‘‘We always get a very nice response here.”
