Volunteers receive instructions Oct. 24 at the Historical Congressional Cemetery for Make a Difference Day. Though the event was postponed because of inclement weather, 81 service members, retirees, military dependents, and U.S. Public Health Service members from the National Capital Region still came to make a difference by weeding and resetting head- and footstones from 8:30-11 a.m., when rain caused them to stop. The group completed more than 202 collective volunteer hours. The rain date for Make a Difference Day was Oct. 31.
In spite of the Make a Difference Day postponement because of inclement weather, 81 service members, retirees, military dependents, and U.S. Public Health Service members from the National Capital Region came to make a difference at the Historical Congressional Cemetery on Oct. 24.
The volunteers worked from 8:30-11 a.m., before rain brought their efforts to a halt. The group completed more than 202 collective volunteer hours weeding and resetting head- and footstones.
‘‘I was really overwhelmed by how these volunteers hit the ground running,” said Barry Hayman, Historical Congressional Cemetery superintendent. ‘‘They came even though the event had been canceled and they did outstanding work.”
The rain date for Make a Difference Day was Oct. 31.
