Ask the Skipper

Pax River CO Andy Macyko

During my last tour here, the base indoor range would offer periodic ‘‘open shoots.” Since I returned in January, I haven’t seen any advertised in the Tester. What’s the story? Can open shoots be offered on a regular basis or can the range operated partly or wholly by MWR as it is in Norfolk?

Due to mission requirements and other restrictions, there are no open shoots conducted onboard Pax River. The Indoor Pistol Range in the basement of the Drill Hall was formerly operated by Air Operations. The range was closed in 1990 and converted into a Drill Hall Fitness Center.

I have noticed over the past two years that child care has not been made available for events such as the Navy Ball for the active duty members. I think that the attendance for such events would increase if childcare was provided for the night. I know from personal experience that a few families did not attend this year’s Navy Ball due to this issue. Would it be possible to offer this service?

The Pax River Child Development Center is always available for that type of service, but since it is a special event, customers must pay more for care as special events cannot be subsidized. Because of the costs involved in staffing outside normal hours, the customers or the event sponsors usually decide they cannot afford to pay the cost. However, child development home providers can provide evening care to these events. The customer pays the hourly fee and the Navy can subsdize an extra amount as an incentive to the provider in question. The Navy does permit subsidized care in certified homes under the incentive package. The contact point is Phyllis Leighton at the Pax River Child Development Center. Her phone number there is 301-342-7637.
