Halloween can be a great opportunity for children and parents to get out and enjoy an eerie night on the town.

To make the weekend enjoyable for everyone, base and localauthorities will be stepping uppatrols through their communities.

‘‘We’ll be doing a lot of walking patrols but residents should not be hesitant to report anything,” said Cpl. Craig K. Cozze, a patrolman with Military Police Company. ‘‘Protecting the community is what we’re here for.”

Halloween isn’t the only night parents should keep an eye on their kids. The night before Halloween, known in some areas as ‘‘Mischief Night” or ‘‘Devil’s Night,” has become notorious for holiday pranks.

‘‘The night before Halloween we do extra details through housing for Mischief Night to prevent any damage to the community,” said Cpl. Andrew J. Zarnowski, patrol supervisor with MP. ‘‘You catch a couple kids doing some things here and there.”

Local authorities in surrounding counties are also stepping up their operations to provide extra security during the holiday weekend.

Extra police patrols will be conducted as a precaution Halloween night, said Bill Kennedy, the information officer for the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office will be x-raying candy from 5 to 9 p.m. Halloween at the Public Safety Center at 1225 Courthouse Road.

On-base trick-or-treat hours are scheduled from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The standard base curfew for Saturday (midnight to 5 a.m. for ages 18 and under, unless your areactive duty or married) remains in effect. The normal midnight weekend curfew for persons age 17 and younger will remain in effect for Halloween night in Prince William County. Stafford County has no curfew in effect for the holiday weekend.
