More than 150 people attended the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity’s twice-yearly Tech Expo at the Odom Fitness Center July 11.
National Conference Services, Inc. referred to the events it organizes at Fort Detrick as ‘‘on-site tabletop technology expositions.” Attendees and exhibitors said the events are considered a top-notch networking opportunities.
They provide a time and place where exhibitors can display and attendees can learn about the latest technological tools available for all the activities at Fort Detrick that enhance research and support the warfighter, said Lisa Yin, NCSI event manager.
The most recent Tech Expo, which was held at the Community Activities Center, drew record crowds, added Yin.
‘‘This is the best we have ever done attendance-wise,” Yin said of the attendees who joined 19 exhibitors at the event. ‘‘This show was a huge success. The exhibitors were really pleased. Many of them came up to us and said they were pleasantly surprised with the turnout and the quality of attendees. This was my first show (at Fort Detrick), and I had great time working with all the Fort Detrick personnel.”
Yin said that she already is looking forward to the next Tech Expo, which will be held at Fort Detrick Feb. 6, 2008. USAMRAA will once again be the event’s sponsor.
Terry McCune, chief of USAMRAA’s Business Oversight Branch, said the Tech Expo helps support his acquisition activities.
‘‘We sponsor the Tech Expo every six months. It provides sources for me for laboratory equipment and in the areas of Information Technology,” he said. ‘‘This event puts me in contact with contractors who can fulfill my customers’ needs. Our goal is to bring in all types of vendors so that our customers can see what kinds of technology are out there.”
In keeping with this goal, there was an array of products and services to be found at the Tech Expo. From the fairly mundane like toners, cartridges, and office furniture to the items that are necessary for a smooth-functioning laboratory, which include electronic test and measurement instruments, there was something for every enterprising buyer.
The director of government sales for the technology company, Rimage, Kevin Gramer said Fort Detrick is one of his steady customers.
‘‘Our company provides CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray publishing systems. The Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) at Fort Detrick use our system for medical imaging and photography. The Tech Expos are a great opportunity to meet with our existing customers at Fort Detrick and to get to know new potential customers. This event fulfills both of those goals very well.”
