Marines from the 4th Civil Affairs Group lead a physical fitness training workout on the morning of April 24 with the boys and girls from Trinidad and Tobago Defense Forces boot camp, along with soldiers and Sailors in Trinidad for the joint humanitarian training exercise Beyond the Horizon.
Marines, soldiers and Sailors in Trinidad for the joint humanitarian training exercise Beyond the Horizon went above and beyond their call of duty on the morning of April 24, when they participated in a physical fitness training session with the boys and girls from Trinidad and Tobago Defense Forces boot camp.

The Marines, from the 4th Civil Affairs Group at Naval Support Facility Anacostia, in Washington, D.C., came up with the idea to conduct the physical fitness session. After meeting with administrators at the school, the Marines decided which exercises to conduct for the hour-long workout session.

The intent of the fitness training with the boys and girls at the boot camp was to show them how a physical fitness training session is held in the U.S. military, said Marine Gunnery Sgt. Larry Trimmer, 4th Civil Affairs Group.

By conducting this training session, the Marines are hoping to show the teenagers the benefits of hard work, discipline and teamwork. They also hope to show them that the United States is sincere in our mission at Beyond the Horizon.

‘‘We just gave them a sample of what our PT session is like,” said Marine Staff Sgt. David Means, from the 4th Civil Affairs Group.

Although the Marines were leading the PT session, soldiers and Sailors also participated in the session. The PT session included 10 different stretching exercises before the group went on a short run. Then the group broke down into two different groups for sprints at a nearby parking lot. The session ended with a short run back and then some cool down stretches.

‘‘Are you tired yet?” said Means at the end of the cool down stretches.

‘‘Yes sir!” answered the teenagers.

The kids enjoyed the workout and were looking forward to the next time they would be able to work out with the Marines and all the other soldiers here at Beyond the Horizon. ‘‘It was good PT,” said Brent Quamina, a teenager at the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Forces boot camp.

The Sailors here also enjoyed their time with the boot camp ‘‘troops.”

‘‘It was fun PT, and I enjoyed listening to their cadences (while we ran),” said Builder 3rd Class Joseph Biccum from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 74 detachment Trinidad.
