Cooling season transition delayed

E-Mail This Article Print This Story
With moderate spring temperatures predicted for the near future and in compliance with the CNIC directed 78 degree cooling level, the transition from heating to cooling season has been delayed until May 27 or later, depending on the weather.

Cooling is authorized when interior space temperatures exceed 80 degrees F for three consecutive days after a four-week delay.

Employees are encouraged to use natural ventilation to the maximum extent possible.

All thermostats should be set no lower than 78 degrees for cooling except in ‘‘smart” (computer operated humidity controlled) facilities where 78 degrees will consume ‘‘additional” energy. The intent is to reduce energy consumption.

CNIC realizes that the requirement to delay cooling will not create ideal working conditions but is not intended to be unbearable. Heating systems at Pax River were shut down starting May 5 and the four-week or longer delay in cooling is realistic and livable.

Heating and cooling of each facility is not identical and the delay in cooling for four or more weeks may not be possible in every facility. Where possible, practical, and cost effective, the heat has been shut off and the chillers or cooling system will not be turned on until later.

After cooling⁄air conditioning start up has been initiated, cooling indoor set points are to be maintained at 78 degrees F.
