‘‘Meet an American Hero” is the 2008 Armed Forces Day theme at Fort Detrick. The free event will take place at Nallin Farm Pond recreation area May 17.

Terry Baker, chief of the Business Operations Division of Family Morale Welfare and Recreation, said Armed Forces Day is a way for the Frederick community to get to know the Fort Detrick military community better. ‘‘This celebration will be a wonderful event for the entire family to enjoy a leisurely day outside with great music and activities, military displays, good food, and one of the best public fireworks displays anywhere.”

Baker said, ‘‘Our events kick-off with a 10k military run at 7:30 a.m. and an SOS breakfast which starts at 9 a.m. Expect to see a laser Light show, military vehicles, along with community exhibits and displays which start at 10:30 a.m.

This year, the installation will host an air show. There will be static displays of rotary helicopters and where the community can meet service members, pilots and emergency responders.

Pat Robinson, American Heroes Air Show, event director said the educational aspect of the event is an important reason for his involvement.

‘‘It’s an exciting opportunity to show how helicopters serve so many aspects of public service and the positive impact they have in the community we serve, not just in mid-Maryland but all along the Eastern seaboard,” said Robinson.

Other activities include a rock climbing wall, martial arts and weight lifting demonstrations. Phantom Shadow DJ, Poor Mary Classic Rock, and the premier U.S. Navy band, The Navy Cruisers will provide entertainment.

The American Heroes Air Show is the nation’s premier helicopter-only, admission-free aviation event that provides a unique opportunity for families to meet the heroes they can really look up to and learn why these unique aircraft and their crews are very often the first tool out of the toolbox in the event of an emergency, natural disaster or homeland security threat.
