Death notices
Lt. Col. Janet Fenton regretfully reports that on May 4, Col. Jacqueline R. Little, Chief, Legal Assistance Policy Division, Office of The Judge Advocate General, passed away. Anyone with debts owed to or by Little should contact Fenton at (703) 588-6721.

ACS classes for May
Army Community Service Family Advocacy Program is offering a free class for children ages 9 and older on being home alone. Do you know how to be safe and what to do in an emergency? How can you deal with feelings of loneliness, boredom, fear or worry? Children will discuss these things along with ideas for healthy and safe food and snack choices. This class will be held on May 16 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Army Community Service Classroom, Building 201, Fort Myer. Sign up no later than May 13.

There will also be a free class on communication for couples — married or unmarried, military, retiree, DoD civilians and their family members — Saturday, May 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sign up by close of business May 13.

Participants begin by taking the Myers Briggs Personality Type inventory. Have fun while discovering how to improve communications between you and the person you want to communicate with the most. Facilitators are Patti Wells and Lisa Yenter. A minimum of three couples must sign up for this class to take place. Light snacks & beverages provided.

Happy 233rd birthday, Army!
The Army’s birthday is June 14 and in the week leading up to it, the Military District of Washington is hosting a variety of events celebrating the Army and its storied history.

  • Beginning Monday, June 9 and continuing through the week, Army Child Development Centers will hold educational ceremonies for students, including cake and age-appropriate history lessons.

  • The Office of the Chief Legislative Liaison will host a cake cutting ceremony on Tuesday, June 10, at 5:30 p.m. at the Reserve Officers Association Headquarters (1 Constitution Ave., N.E.). The following day there will be an FCS display at the same location.

  • On Wednesday, June 11, the Birthday Twilight Tattoo will take place at Fort Myer’s Whipple Field, preceded by a reception to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Quarters 1 on Fort Myer. The reception will begin at 6 p.m., the Tattoo will begin at 7:30 p.m.

  • At Fort Myer on Thursday, June 12, HQDA will hold its annual Staff Run. The run will start at 7 a.m.

  • On Friday, June 13, at 9 a.m. there will be a Wreath-Laying Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony is open to the public.

  • The Pentagon is hosting a cake cutting ceremony in the Pentagon Courtyard on June 13 at 11 a.m. It will be open to all Pentagon and National Capital Region personnel as well as other invitees.

  • The Army Birthday Ball will be on Saturday, June 14 at 5:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required, see www.army.mil⁄birthday⁄ for more information on tickets and registration.

    Healthy historical lunch walks
    Walk through time and get a great workout with a guided tour by Kim Holien, Fort Myer’s Historian and Lisa Reed, Fort Myer’s Fitness Coordinator. Lisa will motivate you through a brisk walk and total body exercises while Kim discusses the rich history of Fort Myer and Arlington National Cemetery.

    The Lunch Time Historical Walk will meet every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, beginning May 14, from noon to 1 p.m. To participate, meet in front of Building 59 with sneakers, a water bottle and ID. In case of inclement weather, meet at the Fort Myer Fitness Center Gymnasium for an indoor workout and history discussion.

    Upcoming USO-Metro events
    The USO of Metropolitan Washington is hosting a Mother’s Day Celebration Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Andrews Air Force Base Community Activity Center (1442 Concord Ave.).

    Cakes and other baked goods from the White House, foreign embassies and the Foreign Joint Services NCO Association will be available as well as activities for moms (neck massages, manicures, gift baskets) and their kids (face painting, crafts, a magic show).

    The event is open to all active duty service members and their immediate family.

    The following weekend, May 16, USO-Metro and the Joint Employment Transition Services are hosting a job fair at the Fort Belvoir Officers’ Club (5500 Shulz Circle).

    Dozens of employers, including area police and fire departments, federal agencies, health care agencies and defense and government contractors are participating. All military I.D. holders are eligible to attend. Bring resumes and be prepared for on-site interviews.

    Memorial clean-up day
    The National Park Service is holding a volunteer work day on Saturday at the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. Volunteers will be washing the memorial. There will be two sessions: one from 9 a.m. to noon, one from 1 to 4 p.m.

    Anyone interested in helping out should RSVP by close of business May 9. Please specify which time you’d like to come.

    The memorial is across from the National Building Museum, accessible by the Judiciary Square Metro Station (on the Red Line). Bring water and sunblock!

    Soldier Show needs drivers
    The U.S. Army Soldier Show needs drivers to keep the show on the road for its 25th Anniversary tour. Active Duty, Reserve and National Guard Soldiers with a valid Class A driver’s license are preferred, but applicants with any valid driver’s license are eligible for training. Freightliner trucks and a commercial bus are used to transport the show’s cast, crew and equipment from April to November.

    Application forms are available online at www.armymwr.com. Once completed, mail the form to U. S. AED, Attention: Ronald Burgwyn, P.O. Box 439, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060.

    Warrant Officer Association
    The Lord Fairfax Silver Chapter, U.S. Army Warrant Officer Association will hold its monthly membership meeting on Thursday, May 15, at the Kingstowne Library (corner of Beulah and Telegraph Roads) starting at 5 p.m. All active, reserve and retired warrant officers are invited and encouraged to attend.     Motorcycle safety class
    Basic riders’ and experienced riders’ motorcycle safety courses have been scheduled at Fort Belvoir.

    Upcoming basic riders’ courses are on May 13-14, May 27-28, June 10-11 and June 17-18. BRCs are held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

    Experienced riders’ courses are held May 15, May 29, June 12 and June 19. ERCs are held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please arrive no later than 7:30 a.m. All courses are held at the Naval Mobile Construction Site, Building 1959, on Fort Belvoir. Each class is limited to eight students.

    Marathon registration
    The 33rd Marine Corps Marathon, ‘‘The People’s Marathon” is still months away, but registration opened April 30, so race to your computer and sign up! Runners from around the world can register on a first-come, first-served basis at www.marinemarathon.com. The race is limited to 30,000 participants and is expected to fill quickly.

    The marathon is considered one of the top races in the world; in 2006 it became the 4th largest marathon in the U.S.

    The marathon will take place on October 26 in Arlington, Va.; the course runs through Arlington and the District of Columbia.

    Green to Gold briefing
    If you’re a quality enlisted Soldier with officer potential and have served at least two years on active duty, then you are allowed to voluntarily participate and enroll in Army ROTC through Green to Gold program. The Georgetown University Scholarship and Enrollment Officer presents Green to Gold briefings every Thursday from noon to 1 p.m at the Fort Myer Education Center.

    Buses to Walter Reed
    Metro Bus transportation is available from the Takoma Park Metro Station to Walter Reed Army Medical Center Monday through Friday. To ride, obtain a bus transfer before leaving the station and take the K-1 or K-2 bus during rush hour. During non-rush hours, take the 52 or 54 bus. Bus fares require exact change.

    There is also a shuttle bus that runs from Fort Belvoir to WRAMC. This bus is available to personnel who hold a military⁄family ID. The bus departs from DeWitt Army Medical Center at 8:15 a.m., departs Fort Myer’s Rader Clinic at 9 a.m. and arrives at WRAMC at 10 a.m. The next departure from DeWitt is 11:55 a.m. Fort Myer at 12:15 a.m., arriving at WRAMC at 1:15 p.m.

    FAST raises GT score
    Interested in raising your GT score to change your MOS or attend an NCO Education System course? If so, FAST (Functional Academic Skills Training) is the way to go. FAST provides Soldiers the opportunity to gain the skills needed to raise their GT scores. Instruction is based on deficient subject areas reflected by TABE score results.

    Nats stadium parking
    Washington Nationals fans may park their vehicles at the Washington Navy Yard or Fort McNair during evening and weekend home games. A Department of Defense ID card and DoD vehicle decal are required for entry to the installations.

    Parking for stadium events is available in non-reserved spaces outside normal working hours (after 4:30 p.m.) on weekdays as well as weekends and holidays. DoD members may sponsor non-DoD guests in their party. At the Navy Yard, MWR food and drink concessions will be available before the game.

    Normal DoD policies restricting alcohol consumption and open containers remain in effect. From either installation, it’s just under a half-mile walk to the stadium.

    Spaces on both installations are limited and will be filled on a first-com, first-served basis. Public transportation is highly encouraged for those who wish to avoid traffic.

    Parking will not be allowed for games that conflict with installation work schedules or ceremonies and special events such as the Military District of Washington Twilight Tattoos on Fort McNair, scheduled for May 21, June 4 and June 25.

    Fans should be careful of personal safety and are advised to travel in groups.

    Education office
    Due to renovations, the Pentagon Army Education Office (Room 3C147) will be closed. The Fort Myer Education Center will provide education services for Pentagon Soldiers; it’s located in Building 219 on Forrest Circle Drive. Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday.
