Welcome to Naval Support Facility Dahlgren. The history of this unique naval installation dates to 1918 when the “Lower Station“ of the Naval Powder Factory at Indian Head, Md., was established in Virginia's Northern Neck on 4,000 acres bounded by the Potomac River and Machodoc Creek in King George County.

Naval Support Activity South Potomac
Naval Support Activity South Potomac (NSASP) was established on Nov. 3, 2005 as a component of Naval District Washington. NSASP is one of five regional commands within the district charged with providing shore installation management services for more than 20 separate locations within the National Capital area.

Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Laboratory
Established in 1918 as a naval proving ground, the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Laboratory (NSWCDL) is the headquarters for the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division.

Center for Surface Combat Systems
In August 2001 the Executive Review of Navy Training (ERNT) study published its findings, and Task Force Excel (TFE) was chartered to serve as the catalyst for the Navy's Revolution in Training (RIT). Among the findings of Task Force Excel were certain centers of excellence, Learning Centers, in the Navy that possessed the superior qualities and standards envisioned for future Navy⁄Fleet training. This brought about a major reorganization of Navy Education and Training, including the establishment of functionally aligned training in centers like the Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS).

Aegis Training and Readiness Center
Aegis Training and Readiness Center (ATRC) was formally established as a training command in November 1984. The facility opened for training in October 1985 with the first class of 14 students graduating on Dec. 18, 1985, from the Aegis Computer Fundamentals course. Headquartered at the Rear Admiral Wayne E. Meyer Aegis Education Center, Dahlgren, Va., ATRC's core mission is training military personnel in the operation, maintenance, and employment of the Aegis Combat Weapons System and the operation and employment of the Ship's Self Defense System. The first building was erected in 1984 as A-Wing of Ticonderoga Hall, named for the Ticonderoga-class cruisers. In 1988, B-Wing was added, and in 1990 Arleigh Burke Hall was constructed as C-Wing and named after the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers. A final Wing was added in 1999, Huchting Hall.

Natural Resources
Naval Support Facility Dahlgren, a 4,320-acre base, is located in King George County. Blessed with a rich diversity of natural resources, it is separated into Mainside and Pumpkin Neck by Upper Machodoc Creek. The base environment includes many different types of habitat including pine forests, hardwood forests, mixed forests, old fields, grasslands, and wetlands.
