Fort Myer’s most immediateneighbor is the county of Arlington, originally part of a 10-mile squareparcel of land surveyed in 1791 to be the nation’s capital. It was once known as Alexandria County of the District of Columbia and included Arlington County and part of the neighboring city of Alexandria. The U.S. Congress returned that portion of the land to the Commonwealth of Virginia following a referendum among its citizens and in 1870, the City of Alexandria and Arlington officially separated theirjurisdictions. The name refers to the home of the Civil War General Robert E. Lee, Arlington House, located on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery.

Today almost all of the land in Arlington has been developed, and consists of extensive single-familyresidential areas and sections where commercial, office and multi-family dwellings predominate. See more about Fort Myer’s neighbor on the Internet at www.co.arlington.va.us.

Fort Lesley J. McNair is nestled in Southwest, Washington D.C., on the point of land where the Washington Channel and Anacostia River join, once called Greenleaf Point. Fort McNair, established in 1794, has been an Army post for more than 200 years, second to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in length of service.

Southwest D.C. attractions withinwalking distance of Fort McNair include the National Mall, several museums and national monuments, the waterfront promenade with restaurants, marina, cruise lines and fish market, the Arena Stage theaters, schools, churches, fitness centers and a public library.
