Location
The Education Services Division administrative offices and college or university representatives are on the ground floor of Bldg. 11 (Delano Hall). The Learning Center – including test section, computer laboratory and classroom facilities – is on the third floor of Bldg. 11. Distance learning facilities for military and civilian training are on the ground floor of Bldg. 1 (old hospital) in Wing D.

Hours of Operation
Administrative offices are open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday from 7:30 a.m. to noon. The Learning Center computer laboratory and classrooms are open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and by arranged schedule on Friday evenings and weekends. (202) 782-7055.

Functional Academic Skills Training
The division provides skill development instruction in reading, mathematics and language arts to service members, Department of Defense civilian employees and adult family members. A student development specialist provides individual help, group instruction and referral to local community adult education resources.

Post-Secondary Programs
Four colleges and universities offer resident traditional and non-traditional programming, which leads to licensure, certification, undergraduate and graduate degrees. All institutions are members of the Servicemembers Opportunity College Network. Institutional representatives are professional staff who provide advice and enrollment assistance for all students.

  • Montgomery College provides general education requirements and other traditional courses leading to an associate’s degree.
  • The University of Maryland University College offers traditional courses at the junior and senior levels leading to a bachelor’s degree.
  • Old Dominion University offers non-traditional distance learning programming at the junior and senior levels for 17 undergraduate and 10 graduate degree programs. It also offers the Military Career Transition Program leading to a master’s degree and Virginia teaching credential.
  • Walden University provides non-traditional programming leading to doctorates in psychology, education, health services, human services and applied management and decision sciences. Master’s degrees in business, education and psychology are offered on-line.
Financial Aid
Soldiers may use Department of the Army tuition assistance to defray up to 75 percent of tuition costs and fees. Soldiers and eligible civilians may use veterans’ benefits and the GI Bill on active duty and in veteran status. All schools participate in Department of Education federal financial aid programs. Eligible service members and civilian employees may use organizational training funds for certain job-related courses. Information is available from the institutional representatives or other division specialists.

Computer Laboratory
A 12-station computer laboratory is available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. for all community members at no cost. The laboratory provides Internet access, many standard software applications and other computer-based training for individual use. Computer specialists are available to help during regular duty hours.

Military Occupational Specialty Reference Library
An education technician is available Monday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to help service members and Department of Defense civilian employees use the electronic systems to acquire military occupational specialty and other Army publications and to enroll in the Army Correspondence Course Program.

Army Training Resource and Requirements System
Service members and eligible Department of Defense civilian employees can get help from an education technician Monday through Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Friday from 6:30 a.m. to noon to enroll in the Army Training Resource and Requirements System for professional development through formal Department of the Army schools.

Testing
A Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) and Army Personnel Testing section is available to service members and eligible civilians. Test sessions take place monthly or individually for selected examinations. The Credit-by-Examination program includes the entire inventory of College Level Examination Program General and Subject Examinations, DANTES Subject Standardized Tests and other institutional examinations. Entry examinations for undergraduate and graduate programs, occupational exploration and career assessment inventories and certification examinations are available free for eligible service members or at cost for other service members and civilians.

Public Schools
Children must attend local schools. Some suburban schools in the area are among the best in the nation.
